Mobile Phone Theft & Stolen Phones On Ebay
Hello i recently had my 2 week old Iphone 7 stolen from me and want to warn everyone on ebay that they may be buying a stolen phone when they start it low… this is a BIG crime problem in the UK and worldwide and there are so many con merchants, thugs and pickpockets about after your hard earned gadgets and don’t care how they get it.
so i want to pass on the information i was told by the police yesterday when i reported it to ebayer.
WHEN YOU FIRST BUY A PHONE FROM CARPHONE WAREHOUSE/ DIALAPHONE OR ANY PROPER PHONE SHOP:
make sure that you first of all use the PIN technology on it, you can program a PIN number of your choice into the phone or PASSWORD (sometimes both) and this will stop any thief’s being able to use it if it does get stolen.
register with www.fonreg.com. You should do this asap too, and they will need your IMEI number which you can find either on the box that the phone came with or on the phone itself if you dial *#06#.
NEVER flaunt your phone about, there are a lot of jealous people out there and it will only take a few minutes for some greedy **** to steal it without your knowledge. you can block it but still they got your handset even if they can’t use it, and a lot of people have found a way around this now.
Always keep your phone in its case so theives can’t see if it is an Iphone. however it is virtually impossible to answer calls when its in case..
Keep hold of original box, it has numbers and serial numbers etc that are very important should the mobile ever be stolen.
BUYING A PHONE ON EBAY OR ANYWHERE
Never EVER buy a phone from a friend of a friend, it could be stolen. if you are caught with a stolen phone and it has been registered then the police will track you and you will end up in a lot of trouble. even more than the actual thief that sold it to you! Handling stolen goods is a crime. So be wary
If its cheap then usually its too good to be true! ask questions. does it come with original box? what is the IMEI number so you can check it is not stolen. (if it is report it to ebay asap!) you need to go onto www.fonreg.com to check this, real sellers will not have a problem with giving you the IMEI number as they will have nothing to hide.
Not all ebay sellers are con artists, hardly any actually but please be wary when buying a new phone. Somebody may have got beaten up or even killed for it, and besides like i said earlier if you buy it and its being tracked by police (which all stolen phones are pretty much now) you won’t have the phone for long, and neither will the thief be about.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PHONE HAS BEEN STOLEN.
check to see if there is any CCTV nearby and call your service provider ASAP. They will be able to block sim. If you did what I said earlier and set a pin, then they wouldn’t be able to use it anyway.
Call your insurance company or whoever you got the phone on contract from, they will be able to block the actual handset and that will prevent the criminals (to put it mildly) to access your phone after they have unblocked the sim within minutes. The phone is dead to them after they have done this. So they will not be able to access any emails, personal id’s or call long distance numbers (ask for your network to put a track on any calls made after it was stolen, it may be able to help police capture these people)
Report it to your local police station, google your village, town, city nearby name and then inform them you have had a mobile stolen, they will then transfer you to right department. They will ask for your IMEI number, full name, network, when stolen, brief description of what happened, who took your phone, and somebody will call you back when they ask for more information – they will then give you the important crime number. keep a note of this, it is what you need to quote if you can find any CCTV or anything to help the case and also no claim on insurance will be accepted without this… so very important…
Fill out your claim either online or by post. send it next day delivery if you can it will speed things up. Most companies will provide you with new handset within 10 -15 working days… I am currently in this process so all I can say is please be careful and follow all the instructions I have given you at the start of this… if we all do this (even when you buy phones at car-boot sales etc) then it can be stopped and thieves will have no reason to steal phones anymore… I hope this helps you and I am sorry if you are reading this if like me your mobile has been stolen recently.
